SURVIVING FLU SEASON

Story Updated: Nov 4, 2013

‘Tis the season for colds and flu….so here are some tips to make sure you shoo away that nasty flu bug…before it bites!

Start by getting a flu vaccination. You can go to your primary care doctor, or to the neighborhood drug store. The earlier the better, before the season kicks into high gear. Experts say it takes about 10 to 14 days for the flu vaccine to give you full protection.

To be on the safe side…frequently wash your hands, or in a pinch, use an antibacterial gel. This is especially important if you’re around someone with symptoms.

Avoid touching your face with your hands…in case you touched something with the active flu virus in your travels.

If you’re sneezing and coughing, do so in the crook of your elbow, instead of into your hands. Or fully cover your cough with a tissue.

If you end up with the flu, your doctor may advise just rest, symptomatic care, and staying home to avoid sharing the virus with others. However, if you have severe symptoms, like difficulty breathing, chest pain, dizziness, or confusion…let your doctor know right away.
